Serious subjects and romance don't go together in our house, or in most homes from what I'm hearing people say. Couples that laugh together are happy, and happy couples tend to get sort of cozy, if you know what I'm talking about.

I know my husband does not want to sit around, sniffling like a baby, while we're watching some tear-jerker. The idea of spending a romantic evening together doesn't start with watching a movie that will tear our hearts out. If I came home with some miserable, sad movie, that happened to have a love story in it somewhere, the romantic evening planned for the two of us would come to a crushing halt. Ladies, I've listed four movies here that are definitely in the Don't-Even-Think-About-Making-Him-Watch-That category.

1) The Notebook - Love found, love lost, love found again. Sounds nice, right? Guess what... they die. Worse yet, he loves her like no other and she has no clue who he is anymore. She has alzheimers which comes and goes, and it's horrendously sad. You'll love it, he'll curl up in a ball. So, there goes your happy night!

2) Closer - Beautiful stripper gets hit by car, falls in love with man, man is quite enamored by stripper, but tires of her. Man meets love of his life, only to be disappointed because she marries someone else, but, that's okay because they'll just keep getting it on anyway. Sad behavior and romance are not exactly a winning combination.

3) A Walk To Remember - The trailers make it look sort of cute, a romp through true love. But, what with the tragic event and everything, it's not a movie that you're man is going to want to watch over and over... or even once. No laughs here.

4) The Bridges Of Madison County - Oh no! You did not just do that! This is a no-brainer, ladies. Watch it by yourself or with some lady friends and several buckets of wine, then start yelling at the television screen "No-o-o-o! Please! You idiot! That's Clint Eastwood, for God's sake! Look at him! He's so cool!" Just keep this movie away from your men if you ever want to be "happy" again, you know what I mean.

It's not bad to have our men get a bit weepy at sentimental parts in the movies, but an overwhelming feeling of defeat or sorrow won't do much for your date night cuddle time. You need movies that have a generous dose of laughs, mixed with a little tender talk, to hit the right balance for a man. I've put together a list of four Have-A-Few-Laughs movies that I think you'll both enjoy.

1) Dan In Real Life - Funny movies that you can relate to are always a plus. Steve Carell seems like he could be your neighbor, or even yourself. He's, well, real. He plays a widower, which although is sad, is not the focus of the movie. After some time of being alone and lonely, he meets a wonderful woman, quite by accident, while he's on his way to a big family reunion. Sparks ignite, he's a happy man. Until he meets his brother's girlfriend. Oops... same woman. They keep it on the q.t., but of course things have to go awry eventually. Great fights, lots of laughs, some family issues, good characters, and the beautiful Juliette Binoche bring this movie all together. Nice way to spend a night alone with your man. Good laughs, good love.

2) The Holiday - The cast is noteably, Jack Black, Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet. Two women switch houses in an exchange over the holidays and learn to live in each other's world. Both have disasterous relationships to get over, or deal with. The men, well they've got their own little "situations" to handle. The characters they befriend are precious, the complex mingling of relationships is very funny, and the movie is just so darn uplifting you'd think it's a chick flick, but it's not entirely. There's plenty of sexy themes and laughs to keep your man interested long enough to, well get interested!

3) Hitch - This movie features a very cool, collected Will Smith. But, a guy with a heart of gold. He truly wants to help his clients find true love. It's just that his career as a matchmaker seems a bit cold or callus, especially to the woman he's trying to impress. His mission, and job, is to get men past the first date, hopefully to the third and on to marriage. He just can't seem to take his own advice. Lots of laughs and some honest-to-goodness real heartfelt sincerity when it all comes down to it. But, don't worry, there's enough off the wall behavior that will keep your man chuckling.

4) Click - Some parts of this Adam Sandler movie might get a bit dark, but overall it's got a lot of laughs. Everybody can see themselves in this movie, if you are sitting there watching the movie amid the bills, toys, job stress, dirty dishes, stupid dog, and crazy kids. We'd all like to have a remote control at times in order to "click" away our trials and tribulations. Well, just see what happens when you get your wish. If for no other reason, watch this movie to see Christopher Walken play the purveyor of the remote control device. Wicked funny, but with enough of a message for the ladies.

Romance and laughter go together. Life is no bed of roses, so when you can share a smile with the man you love, it sure sets the stage for some romantic warm and cozy moments. These are the moments to create tonight with a movie your man will love!
